Listen To What One Prospective Freshman Went Through
If I had REALLY known as
mu.sh as I THOUGHT I did when I
graduated from High School. I
"'o'lldn’t have needed to go to col
lege. Why, I could have taught any
course they wanted and coached
the girls’ basketball team with roy
left hand, all at the same time.
But—I didn’t have to make a
decision then. It wasn’t until after
I had ten years in the “Scfiool of
Hard Knocks” that I realized how
Little I really knew. By that
time I had figured out that Pro
fessor Einstein’s job was still
•afe, and that maybe there was
something to "book larnin ” after
*11. So, taking myself by the hand,
I decided to enter Atlantic Christ
ian and try to come out a shining
example of modem progressive
education. (To date. I’m not such
a shining example and I haven’t
yet gotten out).
So, the first day of school I got
my walking sUck, my wheelchair
and my specs (not to mention my
hearing aid) and trotted over to
the- elm-shaded campus on Gold
Street. I realized my age when I
arrived and saw so many young,
shining expectant faces loking up
trying to find room-numbers, and
experiencing the first thrill of be
ing away from home. For a short
while I felt lost myself, as I seem
ed to be a stranger in the foreign
land of "Tennia”: but I soon found
that the friendly spirit which exists
at ACC was not Just a publicity
blurb in the catalogue—but a real
and vital thing.
Pretty soon. I found that even if
I couldn’t sport around in "bobby-
sox” and "Saddle-oxfords” that
didn't make any difference, as I
was soon finding myvelf a part of
most of the activities on the Cam
pus. 'Course, I couldn’t compete
with the other ggirls in their col
lecting of fraternity pins ’cause of
my marital status - but it was
pleasant for an old lady like me
(age 29) to watch the course of
true love running like a swollen
river over the campus.
My Major being Spanish I join
ed the language fraternity and am
enjoying the thrill of conversing
with other language students In
some foreign tongue. Then too,
my love for the Theatre, which
had taken me all across the coun
try, seemed to find its own niche
in '‘Stage and Script'’, the drama
tic group here at ACC.
There is an organization on the
ACC campus to fit tJie whim of
every student. Some eager beavers
belong to all of them • and by
"Eager Beavers” I mean those
students who have that ole step-it-
' up-and-go spirit. There’s s o m e-
' thing to be said for them; however,
i I wouldn’t advise getting Involved
I in too many things at first 'caume
you might find yourself bogged
I down. 1 mean in your academic
pursuits — not in the mud you find
around the campus on rainy days.
I So, think before you chrjose a
I college But I don't know why I'm
i so free with my advice, cause you
{ wont take it anyway; although I
1 hrjpe you will consider every
angle before entering any ‘'institu
tion of higher learning.’ Four
years is a long '’term” in any
Institution. As for myself, after on
ly two years at AC I have come
to the firm conclusion that if I
had known then what I known now
—I would have packed up my best
formal and my sp»>rt clothn and
headed straight for ACC. I
wouldn't have bothered to bring
any books, because along with all
the fun and happiness that they
dispense at dear old Atlantic
Christian, they also manage to dis
pense brx>ks (at a nominal cost)
and a great deal of knowledge -
even to an old Jaded and foggy
brain like mine.
I wish y<ni luck, or as we say
in Spanish, "Buena Suertel”
